Use the current Home Office employer guide to determine the prescribed check for each situation. This guide helps organise the administrative workflow; it does not decide an individual’s right to work.
Give the process an owner
Identify who performs checks, who reviews exceptions and who provides cover. Place the check at the appropriate point before employment begins, following the official guidance. Apply a consistent process without making assumptions based on nationality, appearance or accent.
Use the current official method
Start from GOV.UK’s employer guidance, including the applicable online, document or checking-service process. Do not treat a screenshot supplied by an applicant as a substitute for the prescribed employer check. Escalate uncertainty before allowing work.
Keep a usable record
Document the check and store the evidence securely in line with current requirements. Track any required follow-up and its owner. A calendar reminder is useful administration, but it does not itself establish continuing permission.
Handle exceptions carefully
When the position is unclear, identify the question and seek appropriate advice using the official routes. QCC can help organise your workflow; individual immigration eligibility and legal decisions require suitably qualified advice.
Your takeaway checklist
- The checking process has a responsible owner and cover.
- The current official guidance is used.
- Evidence is stored securely.
- Follow-up checks and unresolved questions are tracked.
